A young French fisherman, who was accidently hooked in the foot by his own fishing equipment, provided the first challenge of 2010 for the Arranmore Lifeboat crew yesterday morning. The emergency was notified around 6am and the crew raced 18 miles west of the island to take him to a waiting ambulance at Burtonport. They picked him up from his vessel around 7.20am and had him at the port around 9.30am. He was then transferred to Letterkenny General Hospital.
Arranmore Lifeboat PRO, Nora Flanagan said everything went smoothly and the crew's expertise ensured the patient received the best possible treatment in the conditions that prevailed.

Arranmore Lifeboat made over 40 call outs in 2009. The annual RNLI fund raising day takes place next Saturday, January 30 all over the country. A number of events will be held here in Donegal too including a barbecue at the old Arranmore Lifeboat station at Leabgarrow. They will also be repeating their Message in a Bottle fund raiser where a number of plastic bottles are released into the sea and anyone finding them gets a prize. Last year a number made their way to Tory and some of the Scottish islands. Of the 40 released five have been returned to date.
