Last Saturday week saw the first ever VEC Golf society Inter-Schools Cup played for at Narin & Portnoo Golf Club.
The competition is open to all VEC schools and centres throughout the county. This is the first running of the cup introduced this year by society captain Eanna O’Mainin to coincide with the imminent retirement of long serving CEO, Mr Sean O’Longain.

The competition was played out in great spirits in perfect conditions and was eventually won by a Finn Valley College team represented by Alex Harkin, Paddy McDaid and Rory White.

The Stranorlar team won out with a fine combined Stableford score of 107 points, narrowly pipping the Abbey Vocational School team of Oliver Plunkett, Sean Boyle and Fr Adrian Gavigan on 105 points.

Third place went to a combined Foireann na Gaeltachta le Eanna O’Mainin, Gearoid O’Dochartaigh agus Prionsais Ó’Connagáin ar 103 points. Longest drives were Eanna O’Mainin and Oliver Plunkett, while the closest to the pin prizes were picked up by Johnny Sweeney and Ronan Dillon.

Before the presentation of prizes, Society secretary Jim McGlynn took time out to reflect on the progress the society has made since its inception in 1993 and also paid tribute to Mr O’Longain for his 33-year service to the VEC and his unstinting support for the society over the years.

Mr O’Longain then addressed the gathering and thanked the society for the honour of putting his name to the event and presented the prizes and all important cup.

The VEC season concludes with the final outing of the year at Bundoran Golf Club on December 30 with the race for Golfer of the Year still very much in the balance.
